Play Ransomware Starts Leaking Oakland City Data

The Play ransomware group has begun leaking data stolen in a recent cyberattack from the City of Oakland, California.

The initial data leak consists of a 10GB multi-part RAR archive apparently comprising private documents, employee data, passports, and IDs, explains Bleeping Computer.

Private and personal confidential data, financial information. IDs, passports, employee full info, human rights violation information. For now partially published compressed 10gb.

Oakland City’s Allegedly Leaked Data


According to the most recent update published on their website, municipal officials continue to monitor the situation and guarantee to contact anyone whose personal information was compromised.

We are working with third-party specialists and law enforcement on this issue and are actively monitoring the unauthorized third-party’s claims to investigate their validity. If we determine that any individual’s personal information is involved, we will notify those individuals in accordance with applicable law.


On February 8th, the city experienced a ransomware attack, prompting the shutdown of all IT systems until the network could be secured.

Phone service and systems used to collect fees, process reports, and issue permits and licenses were all taken offline during the attack, however, 911 and emergency services were unaffected.

The city of Oakland announced a local state of emergency, allowing the city to speed up the process of placing orders, acquiring goods and equipment, and activating emergency personnel.
